I wanted to create a children's books that had all the fun of a children's books but also helped children learn sign language. It needed to appeal to verbal children as well as deaf children as the more kids that know NZSL the more communication, and relationships deaf children can have, creating a more inclusive environment for them. The story is told in written form, with the illustrated characters signing key elements of the story. This helps deaf children to understand the story and presents an illustrated visual of the signed concept, helping to teach them the word being signed and its meaning. The signed word is included in the story and underlined, helping children identify, seek out and learn the sign. The back of the book includes a resource page with a detailed breakdown of the signs used and where it was used in the book, making it a practical resource to help parents teach and learn the signs included. With bright colour full illustrations and a fun story it will appeal to all children, making NZSL fun and engaging to learn.
