Description:

Resource Autonomy is a social and spatial project that tackles global issues like water scarcity and air pollution through low-tech and circular design solutions. By transforming local environmental challenges into opportunities for resource creation, the project leverages abundant seawater and solar energy to produce clean water and purify air. The design features three multifunctional bamboo towers that serve as seawater storage, a solar desalination device, and an air purification system using crystallized salt filters. Implemented in educational settings, such as Al Qasimiyah School in Sharjah, these towers provide shaded spaces for outdoor learning and community engagement, promoting environmental awareness and hands-on learning.

The project collaborates with local artisans and craftsmen to integrate traditional skills with modern practices, fostering social cohesion and preserving cultural heritage. Notably, the involvement of Nassir Salem, a master weaver, in creating salt air filters illustrates the blend of age-old techniques with contemporary needs. Workshops and collaborative activities further invite participants to engage directly in the resource creation process, enhancing understanding and appreciation.

Resource Autonomy’s open-source design encourages global adaptation and improvement, making it relevant to various environments. Successful implementations in Sharjah, Mexico, and Chile showcase its potential for widespread impact. By focusing on simplicity, community involvement, and environmental responsibility, Resource Autonomy aims to inspire effective resource management practices and promote resilience in the face of global environmental challenges.
