Pacific Media Network
Description:
Our challenge was to future-proof Pacific Media Network (PMN), helping the organisation grow with its audience. To solve this, we rebuilt PMN’s entire digital infrastructure for the modern media landscape. The success of this work would be clearly measured in two ways.
Firstly, increased engagement with PMN’s new digital offering. Specifically, this meant a marked rise in new audiences interacting with the platform. Secondly, by revenue earned through advertising investment. This would give PMN the necessary resources to help fund more Pacific journalism and the upkeep of their new platform.
Since its launch, the platform has seen remarkable growth, with average monthly visits increasing by 14 times*. Online radio listenership has seen a 16-fold increase*. We've also seen a 2.5-fold increase in average session duration, with dwell time shifting from 1 minute 29 seconds to an impressive 3 minutes 45 seconds.
Additionally, the platform's new advertising inventory and sponsorship opportunities have driven a substantial increase in digital revenue, with a whopping 34 times* year-to-date increase. A figure that continues to rise.
*14x increase average in monthly visits: 3,300 increased to 52,000
*16x increase in digital audio streaming: 1000 pm increased to 16,000 pm
* 34x increase in digital revenue YTD: FY 2022 figures compared against YTD (Oct 2023 - June 2024)
The Pacific Media Network (PMN) dates back to 1993, when its legacy radio station, 531pi, first hit the airwaves. It was created as a way to reach the ever-growing Pacific population in Aotearoa - a community with a long and traumatic history here in New Zealand.
With one in four Aucklanders now being born of Pacific descent, PMN needed to evolve with its audience in a highly competitive digital environment. So we needed to rethink PMN's audience strategy and content delivery channels to redefine the way Pacific media is shared in Aotearoa.
We redesigned PMN's entire digital infrastructure to future-proof the organisation and better serve the Pacific people of Aotearoa.
The all-new PMN.CO.NZ is a world-class, custom-built content and publishing platform that sits proudly in the modern media landscape. It’s a revitalised home of Pacific news, sports, business, health, education, entertainment, and culture across 10 languages, including the integration of two 24/7 live-streaming radio stations.
Clear and considered design thinking encompasses this transformation. We’ve created a loud and proud new master brand identity that captures the true essence of contemporary Pacific life. Along with a detailed design system that celebrates Pacific colour and flair, using it as a wayfinding tool for different nationality-based content within the site. The new platform also includes digital efficiencies like the autoloading of articles to keep audiences endlessly engaged, made possible through a completely rebuilt CMS.
