Description:

Our team embarked on an animation project for the indigenous iwi Nga Rauru in Taranaki, New Zealand. The purpose of this project was to bring to life a significant cultural narrative and share it with a wider audience. By utilizing animation software, 3D models, and visual effects, we aimed to create an immersive storytelling experience that would captivate viewers and honor the rich heritage of the Nga Rauru people.

The animation project focused on the tale of "Tutae-poroporo, the Taniwha Slain by Ao-kehu at Whanga-nui, New Zealand." Translated by S. Percy Smith and written by Wiremu Kauika, this mythical story traces the transformation of a small shark into a powerful taniwha, following the bond between its master, Tu-ariki, and the tragic events that unfold.

To undertake this project, our team conducted extensive research and engaged with the Nga Rauru community to gain insight into their cultural heritage, perspectives, and values. We collaborated closely with the iwi's elders, storytellers, and language experts to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the narrative portrayal.

Our insights and discussions with the community revealed the significance of this story for the Nga Rauru people. It served as a metaphorical representation of loss, revenge, and the restoration of balance within their ancestral lands. Understanding the emotional depth and cultural importance of the narrative, we developed a concept that aimed to capture the essence of the tale while respecting its traditional roots.

Throughout the execution of the project, we employed various animation techniques, including 3D modeling, special effects, and meticulous attention to detail. Our goal was to create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience for the audience. By carefully crafting the characters, environments, and animations, we aimed to immerse viewers in the mythical world of Tutae-poroporo and evoke a sense of awe and wonder. By sharing this story through animation, we hope to inspire a sense of pride and connection among the Nga Rauru community while fostering cultural appreciation and understanding among a broader audience.
