Description:

Bayleys set out to create more than just a new office for Remuera — they wanted a people-focused, future-ready space that reflected their Altogether Better ethos and deepened their ties to the local community. Platform Group & Maken partnered closely with Bayleys to bring this vision to life, delivering a workplace design that blurs the lines between office, hospitality, and neighbourhood hub.

Located on Remuera Road, the design opens Bayleys up to the street with a transparent and welcoming ground-floor experience. Auction, event, and meeting spaces are brought into public view, while an adjoining café, open to the community, creates a lively interface between business and neighbourhood. The space hosts everything from weekly auctions to local fundraisers, reinforcing Bayleys’ position as both a market leader and an active community participant.

Materiality and detailing was selected to create a calming and timeless atmosphere, helping to ease the anxiety often associated with the real estate process. Inspiration was drawn from the architecture of Remuera, with its heritage homes and ornate detailing. This influence is reimagined with quiet elegance throughout the interior: a fluted limestone reception counter, vertical wall panelling, herringbone timber and stone flooring subtly reference Remuera’s historic fabric while acknowledging Bayleys’ long-standing legacy. Materials such as timber, stone, aged brass, and leather were selected for their timeless, classic properties and ability to age gracefully over time.

Upstairs, the Level 1 office shifts away from traditional enclosed layouts toward a more open, collaborative environment. Semi-private team zones, a central kitchen hub, and quiet rooms support different modes of work while fostering connection and wellbeing.

Flexibility was key to the design approach. Custom joinery and multi-use furniture allow the spaces to adapt effortlessly between daily operations and special events. Natural light, expansive views, and biophilic touches enhance comfort and productivity across the floorplate.

The outcomes speak for themselves. The space has increased staff productivity by around 20%, attracted top-tier agents, and become a destination for clients and the wider community. Public feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly about the café’s welcoming feel and the revitalised streetscape.
