Description:

Over the past decade, Christchurch’s inner city has faced numerous challenges. The destructive 2011 earthquakes left it locked off with 90% of the CBD buildings subsequently demolished. Just as green shoots were emerging, the impact of COVID-19 risked destroying the life and vibrancy that were beginning to emerge. Mainland Capital, a property fund specialising in commercial real estate, recognized the importance of revitalizing the heart of the city and felt a responsibility to invest in its recovery. The commitment extended to their own employees, who endured years of remote work.

To demonstrate their dedication, Mainland Capital made the bold decision to relocate their office to the city centre. They enlisted Kirkcaldie and AW Architects to design a space that not only embodies their brand but also set a new standard for inspiration. The aim was to create an environment where their staff would love working.

Fast forward to 2023, and commercial vacancies in Christchurch’s inner city are now few and far between. Mainland Capital’s staff takes immense pride in their workplace, which has become a vibrant hub within the city. Their contribution has played a significant role in the transformation of the area.

The project consists of two wings on the top floor of the building. The brief for the South Wing was for a busy working office – then raising the bar with superb functionality and sophistication. Re-imagining the office interior as not simply functional, but uplifting and elegant, with a touch of luxury. This vision then needed to be carried over to the apartment across the lobby, converting the spaces and connecting this new North Wing to the larger office area.
