Description:
Fonterra’s Southbloc workplace in Kirikiriroa Hamilton offered a powerful opportunity to reimagine how space can support people, culture, and purpose. Faced with outdated infrastructure and a growing team, Fonterra set out to create a workplace that reflected its Waikato roots, embraced Māori values, and supported a modern, flexible way of working.
The project revitalised 1,800m² across two floors in a central city building. The design approach was guided by the narrative: “From our central viewpoint in Kirikiriroa, we draw inspiration from across the Waikato.” This vision grounded the workplace in its regional context and informed decisions around materials, layout, and cultural expression.
Fonterra’s five project principles—Connection, Equity, Wellbeing, Kaitiakitanga, and Simplicity—were embedded throughout. The result is a people-centred, adaptable environment that encourages collaboration, movement, and wellbeing. Flexible spaces support a variety of workstyles, while residential design elements—like planting, drapes, and local artwork—create a homely, inclusive atmosphere.
Circularity was a key driver. Materials were reused where possible, and new selections—such as recycled Cleanstone benchtops and PET acoustic panels—minimised waste and carbon impact.
Cultural partnership played a central role. Fonterra engaged with mana whenua and its Māori Strategy team to ensure the design was respectful and locally grounded. Custom graphics, community-facing Brand Walls, and thematic design elements tie the space to its people and place.
Southbloc now stands as a quiet but powerful reflection of Fonterra’s identity—rooted in Waikato, driven by purpose, and designed for the future of work.
