Description:

The People’s Pantry is a pioneering sustainable food hub located on a reclaimed industrial brownfield in Dunedin, designed to combat food waste and food poverty through innovative, community focused architecture. It uniquely combines a surplus food market, restaurant, and commercial kitchen producing daily school lunches for nearly 2,000 children, while serving the wider community including university students and families.

Situated near schools and a student precinct, the site encourages pedestrian access and community engagement. The existing industrial structure is sensitively retained and enhanced with natural materials like rammed earth and mass timber, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and wellbeing.

Key environmental challenges including asbestos contamination are addressed through phytostabilisation and bioremediation with native vegetation. An onsite anaerobic digester converts food waste into biogas, powering the building’s heating needs. Passive solar design, including trombe walls, maximizes natural light and thermal efficiency. Water harvesting and greywater systems support irrigation and sanitation, closing resource loops.

Designed for flexibility and future adaptability, the building employs modular elements and is crafted for disassembly, minimising waste at end of life. Its accessible layout fosters inclusivity, while outdoor gardens promote biodiversity and connection to nature.

The People’s Pantry is a model of regenerative design that integrates social equity, environmental restoration, and economic sustainability. It addresses a critical local need with scalable solutions, creating a thriving community resource that nourishes people and planet alike.
