Merino Jacket is the result of a highly intentional design process shaped by a clear set of values: modesty, efficiency, environmental responsiveness, and emotional connection to place. As both client and architect, the brief was distilled not just from functional requirements, but from a desire to interrogate what a home in Aotearoa can be—uncomplicated, durable, and deeply rooted.
At the core of the project is a compelling idea: to create a home that is wrapped in protection—like a jacket—but open to its context, landscape, and daily life. The name reflects this duality. The rainscreen cladding painted in Merino white, the natural wool insulation, and the proximity to a working sheep farm reinforce a conceptual and material narrative of place, comfort, and care.
