This project involved designing a luxury home in ‘The Reserve’ at Gibbston Valley Resort, reflecting the client’s desire for high quality Central Otago retreat. Inspired by the region’s heritage and landscape, the home combines traditional gabled forms with natural materials like schist and cedar to create a modern alpine look. Features such as slatted sun filters, operable louvres and passive solar design enhance comfort and energy efficiency. Inside, high ceilings, flexible spaces and large windows connect the home to its surroundings, while the courtyard and shared areas support both retreat and connection. The result is a balance of elegance, environmental sensitivity and local character.
A pared-back palette of deep, rich tones and crisp whites sets the stage for natural textures, warm lighting and crafted details that respond to the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape. High ceilings and expansive glazing invite light and views deep into the home, while robust, asymmetrical forms create a grounded, tactile experience. At its heart, an internal courtyard anchors the interiors - a quiet, sunlit space that enhances flow and fosters moments of calm, connection and retreat.
