Description:

Come, relax and stay a while, Vunabaka Residence III was created with that very ethos in mind for a creative, eclectic couple - her French-Mexican, him American, their two teenage children, friends, family and anyone else they meet along the way. The couples shared love for the ocean, travel, and adventure, lead to them choosing a section nestled snuggly between sandy sores and lush tropical rainforest, to create their home away from home.

It was important to our client that her heritage and passions, were reflected throughout the home and to that extent the material palette consisted of dappled touches of ocean inspired blue, warm toned timbers and colourful printed fabrics. For the client, a fashion designer by trade, textiles choices were a high-priority, and the final selections were colourful, textured, and vibrant much like her.

Lighting considerations were important, especially as the home transitioned though the stages of the day. Large custom pendant light fittings, woven in warm coloured rattan pepper the ceilings throughout, creating a warm ambient glow, supported by subtle LED lighting in zones of functionality and hand-crafted ceramic wall sconces in the bathrooms. It was important that the materiality of the pendant lighting was sympathetic to the texture and tone of the traditional bure ceiling construction.

Grass cloth wall papers and soft, natural textures, washed with gentle light, create sanctum like spaces. Authentic Fijian patterns designed by local iTaukei were carved on to the faces of the joinery throughout the home, grounding the house firmly within the Fijian vernacular.

The formula here was simple – the interiors are a reflection of the people and of the place. A warm and welcoming family home celebrating the client’s personal connection to the sea and wonderful Fiji.
