Description:

This project involved the interior transformation of a 2009 Donnithorne Architects home in Fendalton, adapting it to better support the needs of a young family. While the clients appreciated the home’s location and structure, its formal layout and dark material palette no longer suited their lifestyle. A significant earthquake repair programme provided a timely opportunity to rework the interior without altering the external envelope.
The design focused on improving spatial flow by reconnecting living, dining, and kitchen areas, reinstating the kitchen as the heart of the home. Internal walls were removed, and a stainless steel island became the centrepiece, paired with quarter-cut oak joinery for warmth and tactility. A discreet scullery, laundry, and under-stair storage streamlined secondary functions.
The existing herringbone flooring was carefully stripped of its dark stain and refinished to unify the new, lighter interior. Bathrooms were modernised using neutral large-format tiles and oak cabinetry while retaining plumbing locations.
A staged construction process allowed the family to remain living onsite, requiring close coordination and adaptability from all parties. The project responded to unexpected site conditions with a collaborative, flexible approach.
The result is a restrained, refined home that prioritises calm materiality, spatial clarity, and sustainable reuse. It enhances daily living through subtle yet impactful design moves.
