Description:

Originally intended as a modest renovation to improve a much-loved bach, the project quickly evolved into a full rebuild after EQC repairs and structural concerns emerged. The clients—seeking simplicity, durability, and a stronger connection to the site—wanted a small, modern home that retained the relaxed character of the original, while allowing for permanent living with their two dogs.

Located on a steep, south-facing site at the entrance to Akaroa, the new design responds to both the constraints and opportunities of its setting. A key strategy was separating living and sleeping areas with a breezeway—an adaptable threshold space that opens and closes to environmental conditions. The plan prioritises northern light, while framing southern views across the harbour.

Referencing Californian modernism, the architectural language is clean and understated. Light timber cladding is paired with aluminium panels and honed blockwork to suit the harsh coastal conditions. Internally, a light palette, warm timber detailing, and a sculptural steel spiral stair define the home’s relaxed but resolved atmosphere.

The result is a home that balances modesty with resilience, clarity with comfort. What began as a small alteration became a deeply considered, flexible and permanent dwelling—quietly grounded in its site and built to last.
