Paremoremo is a family home in the countryside on the outskirts of Auckland. The house is built on a large, semi rural site. The property includes a significant number of mature trees and a substantially sized pond, behind which the site rises slowly to its highest point at the rear boundary. The site makes the most of the available country views and privacy. Our clients wanted a semi-rural oasis for themselves and their teenage children, as they entered a new stage of family life. They had clear ideas and an informed sensibility around architecture, with one client’s father having been a notable UK architect. They had also worked with us on a previous home. The clients wanted a simple rectangular floor plan, to minimise construction complexity and cost. While a variety of design responses were explored, they all played within these same parameters. The design also needed to make the most of its site, incorporate sustainable principals and provide a cozy family home, whilst meeting the clients desire for an architectural design. One objective with the design was to deliver architectural impact within a fairly modest budget. The floor plate is a single concrete slab, and the roof is constructed from very low profile trusses that create the illusion of a flat plane. The pods are formed from 3D printed concrete elements that play a structural role in the construction. These are finished with an off-white render.
