Description:

The opportunity began with an existing modular structure, originally a car showroom in Auckland relocated to the site over a decade ago.
Rather than demolish and rebuild, the decision was made to repurpose the form, reducing waste and embracing a sustainable design approach from the outset. This constraint became a guiding strength, shaping the final design concept and allowing us to focus on clever re-use, functionality, and a strong connection to place.

The home is made up of two connected dwellings, each with three bedrooms and a lounge, designed to accommodate large family groups or multiple guests while maintaining comfort and privacy.
A covered walkway connects the buildings, reinforcing the sense of flow and openness.
Interior spaces were designed for ease of use, warmth, and durability, prioritising materials and finishes that would stand up to repeated use while still feeling elevated and calm.

Natural materials and a warm, earthy palette were selected to reflect the surrounding Whananaki landscape. European ash sarking, textured brick, wool, soft linen and plaster finishes all work together to create a quiet luxury that nods to mid-century aesthetics without overpowering the relaxed coastal vibe.
Custom furniture and soft furnishings were layered in warm earthy tones to reflect the colours of the local estuary, rock pools, and hillside.

From an economic perspective, the retreat functions both as a family holiday home and a high-end short-term rental, offering a unique accommodation experience in a region where options are typically limited to standard baches or campsites.
This dual purpose informed every design decision—spaces needed to be flexible, intuitive and able to withstand high usage without compromising on comfort or aesthetic.
The environmental benefits of repurposing the structure were matched by the selection of durable, low-maintenance materials suited to coastal conditions. The layout was also designed to maximise sunlight and passive warmth, reducing energy demands over time.

Whananaki Beach Retreat elevates the classic New Zealand bach with simplicity, quality, and care. It delivers on both purpose and place: a home that feels timeless, deeply connected to its environment, and ready to be enjoyed for generations to come.
