Description:

When the state-of-the-art Midcity cinema complex opened in Auckland in 1984 it became one of the city’s entertainment hubs. The cinema complex closed almost two decades later and lay empty for most of the new millennium. There were many unsuccessful attempts to find a new tenant for the premises as there were not many uses for a bespoke cinema complex perched atop a building with cavernous rooms, sloping floors and ceilings, no natural light and limited access from the street.

However, in 2018 the 4000sqm of vacant space on Level 3 and Level 4 offered Cityfitness the opportunity to relocate their existing Queen Street fitness centre to a much larger space and expand their facilities for members.

The refurbishment and reconfiguration work involved a major investment to upgrade access fit for Cityfitness members. The existing stairs from level two was reinstated and a new interconnecting stair installed between levels three and four. The existing escalators were refurbished. The existing mechanical services were replaced, and new energy efficient lighting installed throughout. Fire protection services were upgraded including passive fire protection.

The two floors were reconfigured to provide generous changerooms for members; dedicated cardio, machine and free weights areas; a large group fitness room; a high-intensity training room; and branded Ride and Yoga Studios.

The move proved extremely popular with members, and the site is now humming filled once again with Aucklanders enjoying themselves. Cityfitness’ new premises is a welcome addition to the diverse businesses in the Queen Street area. Increased foot traffic of Cityfitness members through the existing arcade mall has lifted the entire building to be a vibrant hub in the heart of the city.
