Description:

The project aimed to breathe new life into the historic Waikato Regional Headquarters in Hamilton East, drawing inspiration from renowned market precincts like London’s Borough Market and Ōtautahi’s Riverside Market. The vision was clear: transform disused buildings into a dynamic community space that supports the next generation of Waikato makers. Extensive research underscored the social and economic benefits of such precincts, emphasising their potential to enhance community engagement and stimulate local economic growth.

Our design approach for "MADE", was driven by inclusivity and discovery. Spanning three buildings and four levels, MADE was conceived to cater to diverse tastes and interests. We envisioned an environment that invites exploration, guiding visitors from street level to the riverside, unveiling surprises at every turn. The challenge was to integrate the offerings of over 45 tenants across 5,000 square metres while maintaining the cohesive identity of MADE. To achieve this, the precinct was organised into distinct zones—each with its unique ambiance such as the Markets, Mess Hall, Mezzanine, and Sheds.

The design philosophy blended heritage with contemporary aesthetics, using reclaimed timber to add warmth and character, complemented by stone and tile to soften the industrial framework.

MADE stands as a beacon of urban regeneration, redefining the retail and hospitality landscape of Hamilton East. It not only celebrates the city's rich cultural tapestry but also serves as a vibrant showcase for local creativity and craftsmanship. By promoting local products and talents, MADE bolsters small businesses and drives tourism, attracting visitors from near and far. This project sets a new standard for urban revitalisation, illustrating its power to revive communities and inspire future developments. In essence, MADE has become the pulsating heart of Hamilton East—a place where community thrives.
