Over several years, we have partnered with an Australian early childcare provider to create engaging, nature-inspired learning environments across its centres in Brisbane. For our latest project, we embraced biophilic design principles to harmonise play-based learning with nature, offering the children physical, mental, and social benefits.
One of the standout features of the new centre is a ramp that winds around established trees, allowing children to explore treetops in shaded comfort. This element exemplifies our integration of biophilic design, fostering a deep connection with nature.
Design features include:
Interactive nature zones: Child-centric spaces that promote exploration and learning through direct interaction with natural elements.
Sustainable facilities: Solar panels and rainwater collection systems underline our commitment to environmental sustainability.
Innovative structures: The project includes significant extensions, transforming the existing centre into a two-storey facility with studio-style learning areas, outdoor play spaces, and an undercroft car park.
Our team was engaged from the project's inception through to developmental approval. We played a crucial QA role, attending regular site and project meetings to ensure the design concept remained a priority throughout the construction phase. This comprehensive involvement allowed us to push the boundaries of design thinking and set a new standard for childcare facilities in Queensland.
The childcare centre opened in September 2023, offering state-of-the-art play-based learning programmes for over 200 children, from infants to five-year-olds. The facility features thoughtfully designed zones, vibrant colours, and engaging play areas, creating a beloved community space with a strong sense of place.
Through the successful fusion of biophilic design, we have created a nurturing, inspiring environment that sets a new benchmark for early childhood education.
