Description:
Beca’s new global headquarters at 124 Halsey Street in Wynyard Quarter represents the perfect fusion of cultural identity, environmental awareness, and innovative design. Central to the space is the rich cultural narrative gifted by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei: Te Paeroa o te Kawau, symbolising leadership, opportunity, and connection. This narrative likens the workplace to a kōhanga (nest), with employees, clients, and whānau as manu (birds) bringing knowledge back to the nest. Subtle references to this story resonate throughout the building, creating a space grounded in partnership and meaning.
The lighting design played a part in bringing this vision to life, not simply as a technical solution but as a storytelling medium. It elevated architectural features, supported diverse work zones, enhanced wellness spaces, and expressed Beca’s identity and values.
Through concepts such as Visible Structure, Invisible Atmosphere, lighting elegantly balanced bold functional elements with atmospheric glows embedded in architecture and furnishings.
Collaboration with artist Janine Williams further enriched the space, integrating light within a bespoke installation inspired by tidal movements and native bird migration. The piece reflects Beca’s core values—Partnership, Tenacity, Care, and Enjoyment—and reinforces their commitment to sustainability and global connectivity.
From tailor-made wellness spaces to adaptable client function rooms, lighting seamlessly supports usability while embodying cultural and environmental principles. The design is mindful of light pollution by allowing light to emanate organically, reinforcing its subtle presence within Wynyard Quarter’s urban landscape. More than a building, Beca’s headquarters serves as a cultural landmark, inspiring regeneration, community, and connection through thoughtful and innovative design.
