Description:

Inspired by the theme Haumanu, to revive or restore, and guided by the rhythms of the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar), Pōkare explores how public space can support reflection, connection, and renewal.

Pōkare, meaning “the ripple” or “the stirring of water,” symbolises the flow of kōrero across generations. Each layered curve represents movement, dialogue, and the evolution of whakapapa, inviting users to sit alone or together, to pause, observe, and engage.

Constructed from 70 CNC-cut marine plywood panels, the modular design is held together with concealed stainless steel rods, allowing for efficient transport and reassembly. A tonal blue gradient flows across the form, evoking water’s movement while subtly guiding users to different seating zones. Every material choice supports sustainability, durability, and visual storytelling.

Pōkare has lived in three distinct public locations: Auckland’s Britomart, Unitec, and now the Whangārei waterfront. Each site brought new interpretations, from a bike stand to a gathering spot. Its current home was selected for its cultural and spatial resonance, positioned beside the Hātea River and aligned with Parihaka Maunga, a significant ancestral landmark. This orientation encourages users to reflect not only on the object but on the landscape and history it connects to.

Pōkare challenges how we think about furniture in public space. It centres storytelling, adaptability, and care. Through a collaborative and remote design process, we created more than a seat, it’s an invitation to engage with place, with others, and with ourselves.
