Description:

Utilising New Zealanders instinctive desire to bring nature into the home, the Wisp rug draws aspects of smoke and coiling tree branches to create a dynamic visual pathway through interior spaces. As light hits the textural grooves and the silver vein of silk, a trail is formed, inviting you to step through the space.

Sf Design is a New Zealand owned custom rug and carpet company based in Auckland. Our design team is responsible for working with customers and manufacturers to develop unique rug designs for homes in New Zealand and overseas. Since the pandemic, homeowners have altered the way they interact with their interiors. More people prioritise the nurturing comfort that our homes provide, moving towards natural layers and sustainable materials. Our purpose for this project was inspired by these changes, to produce a textural and grounding rug design to add to our organic design collection.

The Wisp’s sweeping organic movement is much like single brushstroke artworks or ‘action paintings,’ where the act of intuitively drawing medium across a plane records the artists gestures, becoming the final product. Our intention is that the tonal curves of the Wisp design can be altered to each client’s floor plan, curating an ergonomic pathway through their room. This project involved several sample developments, communication with our factory, deliberating over warm colour palettes that would suit a range of interiors, and experimenting with carving until we achieved the depth and softness we were aiming for.

The finalised Wisp design was hand knotted by artisan weavers in Nepal, using New Zealand wool at a density of one hundred knots per square inch. This hand knotting technique provides a depth and texture that machine-made carpets cannot achieve. After weaving, shears were used to recreate our vision, with hand crafted three-dimensional carving.

Sf Design is strongly committed to using New Zealand wool to manufacture rugs and carpets. This natural animal fibre not only provides comfort and durability but is also remarkably stain resistant. Wool is completely biodegradable, taking only three to four months to decompose, while simultaneously regenerating the soil by releasing essential nutrients. The use of New Zealand wool supports our countries wool industry and Campaign for Wool New Zealand, promoting wool as a fundamental renewable resource and source of overseas trade.
