The Infinity Print is a screen printed textile design in collaboration with Aotearoa clothing label Kowtow.
Having worked in Kowtow’s Flagship store during and post-study, Phoebe Tims has been part of the Kowtow family since the store’s opening in 2018. During her final year of textile design at Massey University’s Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts, this work caught the eye of Kowtow’s Head Designer. Naturally, a collaboration began and the result is the Summer 2021 Infinity Print.
This print originates from Phoebe’s first ever textile collection during her initial year of study. A body of illustrative exploration and textile sampling was created in response to Havana Cafe, a chosen site in Wellington, which informed a four piece print and dye collection. The Infinity Print finds inspiration in the striking afternoon sunlight in the Havana space, deriving marks and shapes from the distressed cafe floor. The repetitive hand painted marks made with a pointed calligraphy brush offered the designer moments of peace and contemplation of the space as it quietened to a close.
Reimagined in Kowtow’s seasonal colours, the Infinity Print is screen printed with Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified inks on 100% Lenzing® Tencel, a natural and biodegradable fibre made using wood pulp from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests. The production and manufacture of Kowtow’s garments are certified, ethical and within a transparent supply chain.
As seen on five garment styles, this textile design is a celebration of collaboration and of Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s local fashion and textile design industries. These garments have global reach and represent Aotearoa’s leadership in creating a consciously, community minded future.
