The judges praised the design rigours the project took to commercially utilise an alternate high C02 sequencing planet-based polymer as well as to the relentless product engineering commitment to reduce overall material volumes. The judges were impressed by a design that is forging a pathway to transition even the humble plastic chair towards a planet positive solution. Its high density stack for volume shipping to international markets and quality construction were all praised by the judges as positive ways to create long lasting, low impact product.

Introducing Lightly.

Lightly is a beautiful, comfortable chair designed to enrich our increasingly multifunctional spaces. Lightly is super lightweight making it a joy to move from activity to activity and space to space. Light weight and efficient stacking mean Lightly can be easily stored, ready for its next outing. Lightly uses the minimal amount of material to deliver an incredibly strong and durable chair with the lightest touch on the environment.

The lightest touch.

Lightly is designed to have the lightest environmental impact and the strength to last a lifetime. This is achieved by using plant-based and recycled materials, using these materials only where they are needed, and designing the chair to exceed the world’s highest commercial safety and durability standards.

Considered materials.

Lightly is the first chair to be made with the plant-based polymer EcoPAXX. The EcoPAXX used in the chair frame is derived from the highly CO2 absorbent castor bean plant. It has an independently verified carbon footprint of just 1.9 (kg CO2 eq./kg) as opposed to a carbon footprint of 6.5 for an equivalent fossil based polymer. Lightlys seat pan is made from recycled post-consumer ASA which is a tough and highly UV resistant material.

–(26.2%) Recycled post consumer ASA (60% recycled/40% virgin content, glass reinforced)
–(0.3%) fixings/glides

Use less to deliver more.

Weighing just 2.6kg, Lightly uses less than half the material of comparable chairs. The structure of Lightly has been fine tuned to only use material that is essential to the performance of the chair, everything else has been removed. Being superlight and easy to move, spaces can be quickly and easily reconfigured for different activities and varying numbers of people.

The contoured back wraps, supports and subtly flexes to enhance comfort and provides an idling action which is good for mental focus and wellbeing. The seat has a deep ischial pocket and 270 degree waterfall edge which minimises pressure build up and makes every posture comfortable. The optional seat cushion adds warmth, texture and comfort for extended use.

Despite it’s slim profile and light weight, Lightly is extremely durable and has been engineered and tested to exceed commercial seating standards (BIFMA & BS/EN) and can comfortably support users of 136kg. This durability ensures that Lightly will have a long and useful life in a variety of environments from small apartments to restaurants and conference venues.

Space efficient.

A stack of 10 Lightlys is under 1m high making it easy to store away ready for those occasions when extra chairs are needed. This space efficient stack also makes Lightly perfect to ship–with 15 chair stacks we can fit 1710 chairs in a single container. The chairs can then be repacked into lightweight, easy to handle customer orders for cost effective domestic shipping.
