Description:

This noodle packaging design is a sustainable packaging solution designed for an imagined brand called Fukura. Fukura is a small company based in Japan that creates handmade noodles including udon, soba and ramen with an emphasis to involve sustainability within the story of their craft making.

Dried noodles are almost always wrapped in plastic sleeves, but for Fukura, reuse or recycle is strongly considered in their packaging. The box itself and illustrative washi wrappings allow consumers to be more inclined to repurpose the package after the noodles have been consumed. There is use of eco-friendly materials such as kraft paper, corrugated cardboard and washi paper, all sustainable materials that can be recycled if the consumer chooses not to repurpose the package. Each consideration has been thought through in line with sustainability, from the material to the illustrations printed on the noodle wrapping themselves, done using risograph.

With the aesthetic of the packaging, the outer box is minimalistic showing a sense of elegance and refinement. When the consumer opens the box, they are greeted with fun illustrations that expose the spirit of the brand. These bold visuals are designed throughout the packaging, in ‘Our story’, the washi wrappings and even the cooking instructions. In the 3 designs, each different noodle type is wrapped in an illustration that shows the process of production, from the raw ingredient, to the making and the final product. With everything combined, strong emphasis on environmental awareness and sharing the story of the handmade craft is revealed.
