Judge's comments:

Solar Desalination Light. The judges praised the striking form of Arc as well as its ability to create alternate lighting solutions within one product. The judges were impressed by deep exploration of materials and manufacturing processes and the highly resolved and manufactured working solution.

Description:

Crafted from aluminium and European beech hardwood the Arc lamp presents a bold yet elegant lighting solution.
The lamp is based on simple geometric elements to provide a clean, modern form. By adjusting the arm of the lamp the user may direct the light as required, in turn, offering a tangible sensory experience. Through innovative and clean mechanical properties, Arc invites the user to playfully engage with task fulfillment. To ensure the product held up and maintained a high quality mechanical interaction we used a breadth of manufacturing procedures, including a range of CNC driven technology, casting, turning, and a novel metal bending technique. By accentuating the components of the mechanism we created clear affordances that invite the user to experiment and explore the movement of the Arc, whilst centering its usability around that of a desktop task lamp, while still allowing for use as an ambient lighting solution.
Arc is a sculptural piece that surpasses the expectation of practicality.
