Description:

Children, especially those with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), can often experience sensory overload in today's highly stimulating environments filled with visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli. This overload can significantly impact their learning, well-being, and overall development.

Creating huts or hideout spaces, whether at home, school or parks is a cherished memory for many people worldwide. Research and insights from an occupational therapist revealed that this behaviour extends beyond play; it is closely tied to children's development of self-reliance and the capacity to independently regulate thoughts and emotions. Here, I found the opportunity to develop a space to assist children experiencing sensory overload.

Cocoon is designed to offer a peaceful retreat wherever it’s needed. Its versatile design allows it to function as a partition or tent, collapsing compactly for easy storage and transport. Therefore, Cocoon can assist neurodiverse users during the early stages of adapting to social environments, enhancing their coping experiences. The origami-inspired structure not only offers practical functionality but is also visually inviting towards children with its intriguing form and calming colour palette.
Cocoon is made solely from organic materials and is free from synthetic adhesives or dyes. The primary material, strong wool, is used in the outer cover. Strong wool is capable of absorbing up to 55% of noise. Additionally, wool fibres regulate temperature and capture toxic gasses like NO2 and SO2 commonly found in homes from sources such as gas stoves, paint, and cleaning products. Wooden structures are strategically integrated into the felted strong wool, ensuring optimum strength and stability without the need for toxic adhesives. Furthermore, integrating strong wool boosts a significant local industry and embeds the NZ cultural identity. The inner cotton cover is eco-dyed; ensuring safety for children and the environment. It is easily washable and caters to individuals sensitive to coarse fibres, common among those with ASD and ADHD.
Cocoon is a tranquil haven for toddlers, nurturing their ability to spread their wings and soar into a broader world.
