This project involved designing a 12-metre conceptual boat using digital design applications and physical design processes. Through the use of traditional and emerging technologies, our task was to visualise a boat that had a clear identity and well-defined functionality. In doing so we aimed to develop a deep understanding of how 3D digital applications can be applied to the design process to visualise, communicate, and test aspects of structure, function, materiality, form and human factors in relation to objects and people. For this project, we aimed to venture beyond our comfort zone. As New Zealand designers, we often develop highly pragmatic solutions, so we viewed this project as an opportunity to adopt a more idealistic approach. By targeting the luxury market, creating a bold product with striking architectural styles, and focusing on form-centric details, we sought to step out from New Zealand’s typically pragmatic design ethos. We identified an opportunity to create a leisure boat for the luxury market aimed towards users who wanted to stand out. Consequently, we chose iconic architect Rem Koolhaas as the inspiration for our design, and Italy’s Lake Como for the setting. By applying Koolhaas’ bold and striking style the REM aims to draw attention from onlookers with it’s heavy geometric arch supports and contrasting colour hull. The REM’s sweeping, sleek low profile design and elongated bow allude to speed while the high shoulders and blunt drop away give the impression of a larger vessel and the sharp angles. The striking colour block paint job and unique silhouette will turn heads and stand out against the crowds of more “traditional” boats usually found at Lake Como.
Lake Como’s rich culture and beautiful landscapes inspired the functional aspects of the vessel. At the bow we created a space inspired by Lake Como’s culture. A space where people and their families can relax, unwind and absorb the beautiful landscape views from the water. At the stern we created space for play. With a large decking area, and folding wings that maximise water accessibility and freedom in the space. The “rich culture and beautiful landscapes of the region” also inspired the form of this vessel, yet we took this in the other direction. We wanted to challenge the tradition, and make something that stands out from the landscape, local architecture and other boats.
To visualise our concept we created a digital 3D Model using Rhino and rendered it through KeyShot. The 1:15 scale physical model was manufactured using SLA and FDM 3D Printing, laser and vinyl cutting, and meticulous handcrafting. The result is a strong physical representation of our design work.
REM was created for those who seek to challenge tradition, and push difference.
