Description:

Disc is a clean and elegant table light. The shade that gives the family its name is flat and slim, with an integrated LED light source and diffuser that outputs a soft, warm and even light.

The Disc light was conceived as a modern reinterpretation of the classic desk lamp leveraging advanced lighting technologies. The client, a newly formed brand with strong manufacturing expertise, aimed to enter the market with affordable yet technically refined products suited for both retail and trade channels.

Starting from the traditional desk lamp structure, base, stem, and diffuser, we sought to distill these components to their purest forms using modern LED and touch-dimming technology. Early design sketches explored a minimalist aesthetic: an ultra-thin, slightly domed disc diffuser atop a slender stem and a near-flat base. To achieve this refined look, a custom LED module was developed, miniaturising edge diffusion lighting technology. A bespoke pivot joint, derived from laptop hinge mechanisms, allowed for subtle head tilting while maintaining a super-thin profile.

Ultimately, the Disc light is an exercise in technical minimalism. Though its forms and detailing are unmistakably contemporary, its overall silhouette nods to classic lamp designs, making interaction intuitive. Its understated design and refined materiality make it versatile across various environments .The 15-degree head tilt alters the lamp’s character, from architectural and static when level, to almost human and expressive when angled upward, bringing both function and personality to a familiar form.

Recognising the shift in modern work habits, where softer ambient light is preferred over focused task lighting, the Disc light was designed to provide an even, broad glow ideal for reading, sketching, or working near a screen.
