The Heirloom chair was designed to be a modern take on mid century timber frame sofas. It was also a good opportunity to explore soft and interesting form using complex CNC manufacturing. This presented a good challenge as to how to arrange the legs and arms in terms of their junctions and detailing, to provide both strength in these joins and also what stock/size of timber to machine them from.

Initially i wanted to keep the detailing of the frame linear with some subtle radii at the leg and arm junctions. This initially meant a flat seat and low back. The first prototype dictated it would be necessary to introduce a pitch in the seat which dramatically improved comfort, and still retaining the linear language - albeit on an angle.

There was a fine balance between strength and visual lightness from the timber frame and it was important to achieve both as the upholstery required substantial thickness in order to achieve a high level of comfort.
This was refined throughout the prototyping process.

We ended up introducing more Radii on the back legs to complement the front and also on the bottom front and back edges of the legs to create the visual lightness discussed above. It was important here not to go too far and over detail it.

The Upholstery has a generous fixed seat with a loose back cushion with feather/fibre fill. The materiality and combinations of the Soft leather upholstery and rich American Oak frame further highlight the quality of the overall result.

With contemporary detailing, Heirloom is a collection of sofas and chairs appealing to traditional ideals. Heirloom features a soft timber frame that exhibits craftsmanship, along with a thick fixed seat and feather wrapped back cushion.

The Collection was released with an Arm chair, 2-seater Sofa and 3-seater Sofa.
