Description:

The Trace stool is a considered extension of the Trace seating range—a collaboration between Città and industrial designer Scott Fitzsimons.

Originally launched in 2021, the Trace dining chair was celebrated for its minimal form and curved backrest. The stool builds on this success, reinterpreting the chair’s signature elements for a new context.

From the outset, we saw the potential of evolving the dining chair into a barstool typology, utilising the same steel and plywood material palette. The design process focused on distilling which features to carry forward. Ultimately, we determined that retaining the curved backrest with a reduced seat size, and reworking the frame was the most successful direction.

One of the central goals was to maintain a compact footprint, making the stool exceptionally space-efficient. We also aimed to keep the backrest height as low as possible—ensuring comfort and support while avoiding a bulky form.

Through extensive market analysis and design research, we developed a stool that is aesthetically elegant and light, yet still robust enough to pass rigorous BIFMA testing. The makes the design both suitable for residential and commercial environments.

The stool is crafted from FSC®-certified oak ply and available in three finishes: oak, black, and walnut, with an optional black leather upholstered seat. Clean welds and slim steel legs create a light, graceful presence and showcase expert craftsmanship.
