When redeveloping their premium check-in at the International Terminal of Auckland Airport, Air New Zealand saw the opportunity to elevate the traveller experience with greenery. Collaborating with CPRW, we took that idea and pushed it – creating an entirely unique product concept which could tell a story. It’s known as the Forest Wall®.

The Forest Wall® creates an authentic representation of the majestic native forest of Aotearoa New Zealand – within a completely unexpected interior setting. The concept reinforces Air New Zealand’s unique brand identity and its proud Kiwi origins. It tells a story which is distinctly New Zealand.

Weaving together design and engineering expertise with beautiful greenery, the Forest Wall® signals to premium passengers the quality of the customer experience that they are about to enjoy onboard.

The Forest Wall® grew to life after we posed ourselves a mighty challenge – could we create a section of forest in an airport, in a space without any natural light or irrigation, and position it on a wall? To do that, we needed to create a revolutionary product.

We’d already pushed the boundaries when it came to floor-based planting – with our first-of-its-kind Forest Floor® product. This uses a custom planted floor substrate that mimics the forest canopy. The Air New Zealand Forest Wall™ would require even greater ingenuity.

Like the Forest Floor®, it needed to be realistically contoured and structurally sound. But, being on a wall, it also needed to defy gravity. On top of that, the greenery had to thrive in an entirely artificial space.

Engineering challenges aside, our idea was also shaped by the desire to support the quality of the user experience for Air New Zealand. We knew that the Forest Wall® would turn a simple wall into something truly memorable.

The tactility and rich colour of the Forest Wall® complements the sleek, modern interior design of this space. Nature and natural forms are juxtaposed with Air New Zealand’s cutting-edge check-in technology and LED-lit features to deliver a premium check-in experience like no other.
