The Rotorua Redwoods Treewalk asked us to add to their existing collection of our designs with an extra large walk-in pod that surrounds an entire platform. This was a very demanding engineering challenge that had to solve the technical demands of installation without loosing the strong aesthetic. All the components had to be designed to be assembled near the site on a jig, carried into the forest by hand and hoisted into position. The installation was done by riggers hanging off ropes with minimal tools. The entire pod is itself hung off cables suspended from higher up the tree trunk with no connection to the platform. There are two rings of 12 segments each top and bottom, bolted onto a steel ring. There was no room for error and the last piece fitted into the final gap perfectly.
