Description:

The team behind the Casalino Odourless toilet recognised that the concept of eliminating the unpleasant, embarrassing odours that one creates when using the toilet had commercial potential. It solves the age-old problem of people attempting to mask unpleasant smells after using the toilet, appealing to the all important sense of smell and the desire for a pleasant bathroom environment that is healthy and comfortable. After all, bathrooms are no longer just seen as functional spaces, they have become sanctuaries for relaxation, rejuvenation and self care.

At the heart of the design challenge is the desire to eliminate the unpleasant odours created when using the toilet. The team identified an opportunity to draw on their ventilation experience to develop a new technology that would improve the effectiveness of odourless toilets, making them self-contained, easy to install and suitable for all applications.

The unique idea of discharging the odour directly into the sewer was key to solving the design challenge. The team designed the game-changing Odour Control Device (OCD). This incorporates an extraction fan that draws the air from the toilet bowl and a non-return valve that prevents the sewer smells from being released into the room once the fan stops working. The OCD is small enough to fit inside a toilet yet powerful enough to exhaust sufficient air from the toilet whilst overcoming air pressure from the sewer.
The Odour Control Device has the potential to fit any standard back-to-wall or in-wall toilet and has been launched to the New Zealand market with the Casalino back-to-wall toilet at a competitive price. The patented OCD has been recognised by Standards Australia and The Plumbing Code of Australia.

The team is proud to deliver an odourless toilet solution that is quiet, effective, affordable and easy to install. With the odourless function activated by either a manual switch (eg. light switch), or a specially designed PIR Sensor, it operates the same as any traditional toilet making it intuitive to use. Current users of the technology report not realising how effective the toilets are until they use one without the OCD. This demonstrates that the design solution is intuitive to use and engage with while being highly effective.

The OCD confidently performs its function, with independent tests from the University of New South Wales confirming that it is up to 99.7% effective at removing odours.

The Casalino Odourless toilet is energy-efficient, and removes the need for aerosols and harmful chemicals, and an overhead fan (particularly in a powder room).

The commercial potential of the OCD itself is limitless and certainly one of the most compelling aspects to this innovative product. With the ability to make any toilet odourless, the OCD can be adopted by toilet manufacturers around the world, giving them an edge on competitors and offering customers added benefits.
