Description:

Client Brief:

Our client operates in the household and outdoor market and specializes in foldable space-saving products. They tasked us with creating a lunchbox/container that combines the crush-resistant qualities of traditional lunchboxes with the collapsibility of silicone lunchboxes. The goal was to offer a product that can compete in terms of price and marketing with the various collapsible silicone lunchboxes already available.

Reasoning Behind the Design:

Market research revealed that existing silicone collapsible containers, while effective in folding and expanding, lack the necessary support to withstand crushing when in an upright position. This is a major drawback compared to traditional lunchboxes that do not fold. The inherent folding design and material of silicone containers prevent them from being securely locked in the upright position, making folding and crushing essentially the same action. As a result, consumers are limited in what they can safely carry in these containers.

Design Approach:

We drew inspiration from the folding techniques used in cardboard packaging and incorporated curved-crease living hinges to create a collapsible lunchbox that automatically locks itself in the upright position. By utilizing curved hinges similar to those found in pillow packs, the design exhibits a unique and contemporary style, featuring slightly concave and convex sides when erected. The folding and expanding is easy and rapid, simply requiring a push on the side walls, resulting in a satisfying and quick pop-up effect. The lid is designed to click closed, stand open and be detachable, allowing for use as a tray or providing an additional clean surface for food preparation and serving while on the go. When folded flat, integral clips keep the box secure for convenient storage and transportation.
The product is made from injection-molded PP (Polypropylene), ensuring it is a monomaterial, food-safe, and fully recyclable.

Testing and Crush Resistance:

The product was Instron tested for crush resistance, consistently withstanding over 8kg of force under intense one-sided pressure and enduring pressures exceeding 17kg across the entire box without damage. These results confirm its suitability for everyday use as a sturdy yet foldable storage container.
