Description:
Designed as a modular, easy-to-install suite, the modular parking suite repurposes existing car spaces to support bike travel. Strategically placed for passive surveillance and linked to community services like Bike Hubs, it integrates journey-planning maps and promotes everyday visibility of cycling.
The greater cycle wayfinding system demonstrates a systems approach, with a family of complementary strategies, artefacts and planning tools to improve the amenity, visibility and attractiveness of cycling in the Auckland region.
Supporting this strategy, Maynard designed and developed a system of high-quality modular cycle parking that can be easily and efficiently implemented across Tāmaki Makaurau. Designed to fit within a standard car parking space and employing a kit-of-parts approach, the parking modules are simple to transport and install while being highly adaptable to a range of sizes and configurations. The parking modules also provide complementary amenity including maps and community notices, while their bright-green canopies encourage passive surveillance and maximise the visibility of cycle infrastructure to potential users.
Modular cycle parking modules were developed to be cost-effective, robust and able to be produced and maintained efficiently by multiple manufacturers.
The system is constructed using a modular, kit-of-parts approach. This means that core components can be scaled and interchanged to create various system configurations which suit different use cases while retaining a consistent product language.
The product form language is urbane and iconic, referencing at once a stand of nikau or a vernacular bush hut. Details tie the product firmly to AT’s emergent brand identity while leaving room for local identity.
