“Perspective” is a documentary photography project that emerged from my personal journey and a deep desire to challenge prevailing stereotypes about Malawi. Growing up among missionaries and later volunteering as a photographer in rural Malawian communities, I witnessed a side of Malawi that is rarely portrayed in mainstream narratives. A place brimming with resilience, joy, and a profound sense of community. These experiences reshaped my perspective, inspiring me to celebrate the beauty found in everyday life and to foster empathy through authentic storytelling.
The core idea behind “Perspective” is to broaden perceptions of Malawi by highlighting the richness of family, faith, and community, rather than focusing exclusively on hardship. My approach combined ethnographic photography with authentic, culturally sensitive storytelling, ensuring that Malawian voices and realities took center stage. To extend the project’s reach, I developed a companion website that mirrors the book’s aesthetic and message, offering a curated preview for a wider audience.
The design of “Perspective” prioritises authenticity and accessibility. The book opens with an Editor’s Letter, inviting readers to embark on the journey as fellow travelers. A carefully curated selection of documentary-style photographs is presented with a minimal layout, allowing the images to speak for themselves. Every design decision, from image sequencing to cropping, was made to unveil Malawi’s beauty, challenge stereotypes and encourage introspection.
What elevates “Perspective” is its commitment to social and cultural wellbeing. “Perspective” aims to represent Malawian communities with honesty and respect. Producing the books in New Zealand supports local business, while the media was used by World Vision to advance and advocate their charitable work. Ultimately, “Perspective” demonstrates the transformative power of storytelling, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate world.
