Description:

LEGO: An Organisational Method is a response to the ISTD Brief ‘Putting Things in Order,’ that required us to examine lesser known methods and obscure ways people have put things in order. It explores the way in which LEGO can be categorised and organised through history, storytelling and interpretive typography.

The LEGO brick has become the perfect tool for expressing our imaginations as well as being one of the most creative and versatile toys of the twentieth century. LEGO is for everyone, whether you’re 5 or 65 years old, digging through a pile of loose LEGO bricks is an act of discovery.

This publication consists of two narratives. The main narrative showcases the order and categorisation LEGO can be sorted into. The second narrative is intertwined throughout to represent the history and progression of the LEGO brick. There are four main sections: Duplo, LEGO, Technic and Minifigures. Information adapting to best suit each section. It aims to educate the reader on LEGO along with assisting in the organisation of their LEGO collection.

The visual language of this publication is playful, colourful and expressive. The format and colour choices are inspired by the interlocking, studded, plastic brick, allowing for information to be rotated for ‘interlocking’ with paragraphs, making each spread cohesive but easily adaptable. Structured forms and studs from LEGO bricks are reflective in this publication, shown through the stepping of paragraphs, circular stud aesthetics and different hierarchy and sizes. The colour palette is the three primary colours. These colours were chosen to best represent the playfulness of LEGO and are part of the original seven hues released.

Typographically, Foundry Gridnik is represented throughout this publication. Gridnik is a geometric typeface, which is extremely adaptable due to the range of typeface widths. Gridnik gives this publication the cohesive feeling from the typeface to the content, it showcases the style of the subject matter, through the angles and geometric letterforms. Gridnik is represented through three weights: Bold, Medium and Regular allowing it to be adapted for any content throughout.

This publication begins by introducing the subject LEGO, by acknowledging its origins and history. It illustrates LEGO through Time and Growth which are intertwined through each of the four sections. Each section is a continuation and expansion from the section previous, as your collection gets bigger and you age, the information is adapted to fit those with larger collections, and the need for further organisation and categorisation.

The intended audience is broad, however it is specifically aimed towards those who have an interest in LEGO and/or have LEGO collections of any size. They can be inspired and influenced by this publication to learn and be typographically shown ways in which LEGO collections can be organised.

LEGO: An Organisational Method is a glued, hardcover book. The intended finish for the cover is a LEGO baseplate, creating a tactile book allowing LEGO users to interact and customise their cover. Bringing the playfulness from beyond the pages to the cover.
