Description:

This project explores the integration of traditional Chinese concepts of hell with art, particularly through the creation of illustrated books, to blend cultural heritage with emotional experiences. The motivation behind this research includes conveying cultural traditions, stimulating contemplation of ethics and values, and promoting cross-cultural communication. The researcher’s personal experiences and familial background deeply influence her passion for and exploration of traditional culture, with a desire to introduce traditional values into modern society through innovative artistic expressions.

The project background encompasses the origin and development of traditional Chinese concepts of hell within the context of Chinese culture, rooted in ancient religious and philosophical traditions such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The concept of hell represents a supernatural realm where souls undergo judgment, suffering, or purification after death. This concept has significantly shaped Chinese values and moral norms, influencing cultural identity and beliefs. The fusion of traditional culture with art allows artworks to convey profound historical and cultural meanings, enriching contemporary art with deep-rooted significance.

The primary design outcomes of this project include two illustrated books and their packaging. Through the integration of illustrations, typography, paper selection, and traditional binding techniques, the project conveys the fusion of traditional Chinese concepts of hell with art, presenting a cultural and visual experience. Innovative elements such as bilingual content, colour contrast, and mask motifs highlight the project's uniqueness and address the needs of diverse cultural and linguistic audiences, infusing new vitality and meaning into the dissemination and preservation of traditional culture.
