ETERNAL ECHOES explores the deep and rich history behind traditional Korean ceramics and how these ideas influence a contemporary design system. The project centres around a publication about the different traditional Korean ceramics, two ceramic cases - Black Clay Ceramic Case V1 and White Porcelain Ceramic Case V2. These cases act as physical extensions of the publication. Further enhanced by augmented reality features and 3D models of the ceramics featured that bring the ceramics and the content to life, offering an interactive digital experience that bridges the physical and virtual worlds. The design system for the publication draws inspiration directly from the philosophies and aesthetics of traditional Korean ceramics. For example, Baekja ceramics, known for their pure white porcelain is reflected into the design system by the use of negative space. This creates a sense of calmness, openness and simplicity that echoes the quiet elegance of the ceramics themselves. Meanwhile, the rich textures and deep tones of black clay ceramics influenced the use of contrast and material choices within the design, reflecting ideas of balance and duality. Rather than simply copying traditional ceramic forms, the project focuses on the core ideas behind them, such as natural harmony, simplicity, and the beauty found in imperfection and interprets these ideas in a contemporary design context. The ceramic cases embody these philosophies by serving not just as containers but as thoughtful objects that invite quiet contemplation and engagement. The addition of augmented reality adds a modern layer to the experience. By integrating digital elements with the physical ceramics, viewers can explore the processes and cultural meanings behind the traditional ceramics in an immersive way. This fusion of craft and technology offers a fresh way to connect with tradition, allowing the audience to experience the project on multiple levels. This project was a way for me to explore and bring together a wide range of design mediums. From editorial layout and material research to 3D object design and digital experiences, I was able to experiment with how design can exist across both physical and interactive forms. Each medium (print, ceramic, and AR) offered its own challenges and opportunities, and together they allowed me to think more broadly about how narrative, material, and interaction can work as one cohesive system.
As a whole, ETERNAL ECHOES is a dialogue between the past and present. It shows how the heritage of Korean ceramics can inspire new design approaches that are respectful of tradition yet open to innovation. Through form, material, and technology the project creates a multi-sensory experience that invites viewers to reflect on cultural memory and how it can be carried forward today.
