There are few choices more personal than what we put on our skin. Matakana Skincare is the very finest in natural skincare, made with organic New Zealand native marine and land bio-actives. Featuring local ingredients like red seaweed and Mamaku, black fern meristems and certified organic Mānuka Honey, Matakana products are a treat for the senses – crafted by nature, and proven by science.

After purchasing the business, the new owners approached us to completely overhaul the brand and help reposition it for their expansion into high-end department and cosmetic stores. Alongside formulation changes, the new brand aesthetic needed to position Matakana Skincare as a premium product commanding a high price-point.

To achieve the desired feeling of an all natural skincare brand that embodied femininity and elegance, the design approach features a serif typeface and a soft sage colour across all products. For the packaging, we developed a design system that works consistently across a range of bottles and boxes and partnered with Mat at Think packaging to develop custom boxes. Print embellishments such as embossing and white foiling were used to give a premium, tactile feel, elevating the customer experience.

As part of our ideation, we also developed the concept of ‘Skin Systems’ which uses a product numbering method to personalise a product combination best suited to a customer’s skin concern such as hydration or dullness. Eight different sub-brands have been created for each of these systems as part of the signature range.
