Description:

Matariki is a time of reflection, celebration, and connection. It marks Te Tau Hou Māori, the Māori New Year, heralded by the rising of the Matariki star cluster. This period is traditionally a time to honour the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. It is a time for whānau to come together, to remember loved ones who have passed, to celebrate the harvest, and to share in the abundance of the season.

This Matariki, in keeping with this year’s theme, “Whetū Heri Kai” (the bringer of food), Tohu Studio decided to stir the pot and serve up to our clients something that’s more than just kai – a taste of our story. Our koha to our clients is a tāonga of Aotearoa, the legendary pāua pie. Why a pie, you ask? Well, the pāua is a lot like Tohu – humble on the outside but inside, a bounty of riches. It’s an epic tale that tells of our connection to te ao Māori, our tūpuna, and our moana. We invited our clients to savour our story – a narrative of innovation, culture, and community. This Matariki, we didn’t just share a pie; we shared a piece of our heritage, our passion, and our relentless pursuit of excellence.

In a simple but perfectly sized twin pie box. The curve of the perforation pays homage to the pāua shape and the perforation itself represents the holes of a pāua shell. Once torn, you are greeted with a taste of our brand story. Inside the box, an iridescent abstract pattern mirrors the inside of a pāua shell, revealing a card with a karakia, floating on tissue paper. Beneath the surface of our tissue waves, two pies sit nestled on pie coasters, ripe for harvest. One for you and the other to share.

We present this tasty initiative as proof of our dedication to blending tradition with innovation. We’re not just creating designs; we’re serving up experiences that linger, that fill the heart and the puku, just like the unforgettable and unpretentious pāua pie.
