Christmas. The most wonderful time of the year. When every creative agency desperately racks their battered brains for a client gift not involving custom wine labels - only to despair and order gift boxes full of preserves. For us, our gifts are an opportunity not only to entertain but also to educate and excite our clients about new movements in digital.
In 2021 some of the most exciting, baffling and probably era-defining creative innovations emerged through NFTs, Non-Fungible Tokens that allowed digital media to be scarce and have proof of ownership, and hence… value. Lots of it.
But beyond financial speculation, there continue to be fascinating opportunities emerging in NFTs for artists and brands, and we wanted our clients to start immersing themselves in this paradigm shift.
So we created a series of programmatic art works entitled Spaced Heads, immortalising them as Non-Fungible Digital Xmas presents for our diverse range of clients across NZ, the US and Europe.
With NFT markets flooded with anthropomorphic animals, we looked to create a new spin on avatars. The art style was a collaborative process between our interactive developer, our creative director, and Mexican freelance illustrator Pablo Espinosa. Pablo specialises in ultra-vivid pop art with psychedelic overtones, and we flowed this into Spaced Heads, replete with glitches, exposed brains, floating geometry, wayfarer sunglasses, flames and lots of eyeballs.
Pablo illustrated heads, eyes, brains, chests, bodies, backgrounds and foregrounds. We then wrote software to programmatically recombine them into 15,625 iterations, each with their own unique personality.
These surreal characters needed an appropriate brand, so after Scatterbrains and Bit Meat fell by the wayside, Spaced Heads were born. We wrote them a wild backstory and launched them into the world on their own website.
We minted (created) the first 512 NFTs on Solana, permanently recording them on the blockchain, and spun up digital wallets to gift to our clients and receive our Christmas NFT cheer.
For many of our clients it was their first NFT, while others were already Web3 natives and thoroughly immersed in this world. The feedback was universally positive and appreciative. Merry Christmas!
“We love it! Claimed Spaced Head #149”
“Thank you so, so, so much for this. This is such an inspiring and original Christmas gift! I love it, love the design of them.”
“Oh my gosh, this is definitely the most thoughtful and welcome gift I will receive this Christmas! Thank you very much indeed.”
