Surfing World magazine

Description:
Now in its second year since our redesign, Surfing World magazine is slowly maturing – design wise as well as content wise. It's a grown up surf-magazine, looking back to the history of surfing, to the uncertain future underscored by the climate emergency and the changing nature of the once male dominated sport. It's a magazine that is as much about surfing as it is a voice of surf communities – political but not treading any particular party lines. The minimal typographic design and flexible grid that we have designed back in 2021 remains fully functional but 2022 saw a much more complex art direction with a stronger focus on imagery that speaks to current affairs as well. 2022 provided ample opportunities to put that approach to practice – from images of mud covered junior surfers during the NSW floods and their parents surfing waves of sewage water to surfers going off-grid during the COVID-19 pandemic to surf communities being obliterated by rising costal property prices the magazine is becoming more and more a mirror of the fast changing world through the eyes of the Australian and broader surf communities.
