Description:

FWWC2023 is a system-centric type family created for FIFA’s 2023 Women's World Cup campaign. The typeface aims to reflect the characteristics of the women competing: bold, modern and dynamic. An extended character set that includes the Cyrillic alphabet is in keeping with FIFA’s international reach.

FWWC2023 finds its origins in no-nonsense modernist graphic design principles specific to those explored during the early 20th century by Bauhaus luminaries such as László Moholy-Nagy and Joost Schmidt. Central to the design, is a kit of component modules that help to inform the anatomy of each individual glyph. This method of construction can be incredibly diverse while also remaining somewhat problematic — requiring certain characters to be optically adjusted to allow for an even texture. Initially, a number of alternate forms were created, however these were eventually discarded for reasons of simplicity.

The type family consists of six individual styles, ranging from regular to black. While the associated brand campaign is bold and energetic, FWWC2023’s geometry aims to offer a feeling of consistency alongside accompanying indigenous patterns crafted by New Zealand and Australian artists.
