Description:
When was the last time you craved quiet? This week? Yesterday? Maybe just a few hours ago? The modern world grows louder every day, and it’s taking a toll. In New Zealand alone, noise from road and rail transport is linked to sleep disturbance, cardiovascular issues, and general stress, with an estimated $654 million in social costs each year.
Traditional solutions like noise-cancelling headphones or meditation apps often feel isolating, require time and effort, or simply don’t fit into everyday life. ReForm takes a different approach. It helps you reshape your sound environment without needing to escape it. Instead of muting everything, it gives you control to amplify what matters and lower what doesn’t. It offers a breath of fresh noise, helping to reduce overstimulation as you move through the world.
ReForm is grounded in mindful philosophies such as Forest Bathing, the practice of immersing yourself in nature to restore clarity, and Wu Wei, the Taoist concept of effortless action. These ideas shaped every part of the experience, from the calm visual design to the intuitive interaction model. The result is a tool that fits naturally into daily life, offering calm with minimal effort.
With just a mobile device and a pair of headphones, ReForm uses advanced machine learning to listen to your environment and separate individual sounds in real time. These sounds appear as soft bubbles you can tap, hold, and drag to mute or amplify. Over time, ReForm learns from your actions, building environment profiles that adjust automatically as you move from one place to another. The more you use it, the less you have to think about it.
The interface is dark, simple and deliberately quiet, with translucent glass-like elements that blend into background tints. These tints are generated using ambient light sensing, location context and, if enabled, momentary low-frequency input from the camera. This happens only when a new environment is detected. No imagery is saved or identifiable, just general light and colour used to ground the UI in your surroundings.
ReForm also helps you stay safely connected. Conversation passthrough filters out background chatter while letting voices directed at you come through clearly. Alert passthrough ensures you still hear important sounds like crosswalk signals or emergency sirens. Even when alert passthrough is turned off, ReForm gently notifies you of critical hazards. These layers of awareness are often missing in other tools, where you’re left to manage everything manually.
ReForm reduces stress and sensory overload without adding complexity. It’s inclusive and adaptable, supporting anyone from those with hearing sensitivities to people simply seeking more control over how they experience the world around them. It enhances clarity and comfort, helping you move through life with more intention and less noise.
