Description:

In New Zealand there is a significant problem with how many recyclable items go to landfill each year. Most of the rubbish we produce gets put into landfill when it could be reused in a meaningful way. A large portion of this statistic is e-waste and other less-known recyclables that the majority of people are not aware can be recycled.

Many Aucklanders have a number of unwanted items and rubbish in their homes that, more often than not, will get put into landfill. Many of these items could be recycled, but few people are aware that they can be. It’s also difficult to find locations in Auckland that can recycle more niche items, if you are aware that they can be recycled in the first place.

Because of this, people tend to give up easily because it takes too long to find anything worth their time. ‘Recycle Guide’ aims to help solve this problem. This service allows Aucklanders to educate themselves on what can and can’t be recycled, while giving them the necessary information to go and recycle their unwanted items. It elevates the level of knowledge about recycling, which will help create a world where people are more active in their contribution to recycling.

My intention with this design was to increase the amount of recycling we do in Auckland, mainly with lesser-known recyclables (e-waste, oils, metals, etc.). I wanted to achieve this by educating Aucklanders about these recyclables, and giving them a convenient way to get rid of them. This would make recycling a much less time consuming experience which would make people more likely to recycle than putting their items into landfill. This change in mindset would increase the amount of recycling that we do in New Zealand, and propel us forward as a leader in a green world.
