Syndicate is a narrative-driven, 3D side-scroller horror game set within an abandoned orphanage where sorrow, guilt, and a dark history intertwine. Inspired by the urban legend of the Carlile House, a Gothic building in Grey Lynn, Auckland, Syndicate reimagines the myth into an interactive experience with added narrative. Syndicate explores an immersive experience that shows themes of trauma, redemption, and the haunting power of the past. The game invites players to control Forty-Six, a forgotten soul left to wander the decaying halls as he searches for answers to the buried mysteries.
In a team of three, we crafted a game that would leave a lasting impression on players who appreciate environmental narrative and psychological horror. Drawing on video game inspirations such as Little Nightmares and Limbo, we aimed to make Syndicate more than just a horror game full of jumpscares. Every design element, from environments to sound design, was intentionally created to arouse a deep sense of unease and grief that grows as players journey through the tragic story behind the orphanage.
Over the course of our capstone project, we used Unity 3D for technological components and creative software such as Maya and ZBrush, which brought life to the atmosphere and cinematic techniques. Lighting was a crucial component that highlighted eerie details, while the environmental sound included faint children's screams, and creaking floorboards created a tense atmosphere that enhanced player immersion. Core gameplay mechanics, such as the side-scrolling and intentional camera pans, encouraged players to slow down and carefully explore their surroundings. This creates a sense of paranoia and unease as they navigate between each room. Puzzles are seen throughout the game, and diary entries from mutated orphans which offer subtle clues that allows the player to piece together the story at their own pace without overwhelming them with information.
The commitment to maximalist environmental assets, visual symbolism, and strategic pacing gives Syndicate a melancholic tone and personality. Players aren't spectators but rather active participants in Syndicates narrative mysteries. The peeling walls, burnt debris, and gruesome relics of the orphanage become a narrative itself. This encourages players to reflect on the tragedy and loss that took place long ago, causing sympathy for the lost souls. The outcome of Syndicate is an emotionally engaging game that challenges players to look beyond the surface. Syndicate has been explained by players to have a chilling atmosphere and well-thought-out environments, along with a subtle balance between fear and empathy. Whether players are exploring the orphanage for the first time or piecing together its final secrets, they leave the game feeling as though they have experienced a heartfelt and haunting story. Our team's collaborative process, creative vision, and commitment to crafting a unique and emotional experience have resulted in a game we believe deeply resonates with us. Overall, it is an invitation to discover the souls of the past and help give voice to those who were once lost.
