Description:

In response to the growing challenge of food waste in urban environments, Grounded is a speculative design project that envisions a future where composting is integrated seamlessly into daily life. The project proposes a system that leverages technology to make composting easy, accessible, and rewarding for all, regardless of living situation. Through a smart composting system, users can sort, process, and donate food waste, turning it into valuable nutrient-rich fertiliser that can be used in community gardens or personal spaces.

Grounded believes there is an opportunity in addressing the current gap in food waste management. While large-scale initiatives like Auckland's Zero Waste Plan and services like Rukenga Kai are helping reduce landfill waste, they are often fragmented and not universally accessible. Many urban residents, especially those in apartments or lower-income areas, lack access to composting solutions. Despite this, a majority of New Zealanders express concern for the environment but struggle to take consistent action. Grounded seeks to bridge this gap by transforming composting from a task into a social and rewarding activity, thereby encouraging long-term behavioral change.
The design of Grounded was focused on user experience, trying to make sure the app was simple, accessible and collaborative. The app features a map that helps users locate nearby compost hubs, gamified features such as achievements and credits, and the ability to donate fertiliser to community gardens. It also integrates participatory democracy, allowing users to vote on community decisions related to composting hubs and waste management.

The design is inspired by solarpunk ideals, drawing from speculative fiction and works like Ecotopia and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. These influences help shape a world where sustainability and technology work hand-in-hand to create a harmonious urban environment. The app’s visual identity incorporates hand-drawn, crafted elements to evoke a sense of connection to the earth and a commitment to community-driven action.
In terms of impact, Grounded serves as more than just a composting tool; it provides a framework for broader urban sustainability efforts. The project sparks dialogue about the future of waste management, environmental stewardship, and the role of technology in enhancing communal living. By creating a system where users are active participants in the waste cycle, Grounded empowers individuals to take ownership of their local environment and contribute to a larger regenerative system.

Ultimately, Grounded envisions a world where waste is not a problem but a resource to be valued. Through thoughtful design, technology, and community engagement, it seeks to inspire a future where sustainability is not just an aspiration but a way of life for everyone.
