Description:

Art Gallery of Ballarat, Australia’s oldest regional gallery, had undergone a huge transformation. Reinventing itself to address current community issues through ever-evolving exhibitions and thought-provoking ways of displaying its collection. While positive change was happening on the ground, AGB were in need of a complete redesign of their digital experience.

With an outstanding collection of over 11,500 artworks, their major pain-point was speed and performance. The site not only needed a full, searchable image library linking directly to AGB’s collection management system, but better usability with creative ways to explore and discover.

AGB is famous for its grand, ‘salon hang’ entrance. The staircase is rehung every year to display a stunning feature of new and old works. We redesigned their digital presence to become an eclectic curated destination in its own right; not just a mirror of their physical gallery or a quick destination for opening hour information.

The interactive digital hang can be easily curated to reflect the season, incorporating current exhibitions and events.

Embracing the gallery’s motto ‘Not for self, but for all’, we designed ‘Help us hang’, where the community votes on what goes on display each month.
