Description:

In 2020, Air New Zealand committed to a new generation of Boeing 787s to extend its offering for travellers coming to and from New Zealand. This supported the flagship routes such as Auckland to New York nonstop. To match these new-generation aircraft, Air New Zealand decided to overhaul its whole in-flight customer experience, investing in redesigning the cabin interiors, and digital offerings.
New technology offered the opportunity to leap forward in the digital experience and differentiate Air New Zealand from its competitors. The current Inflight Enterntainment products would be replaced with high-definition 4K screens with multi-touch capabilities rarely seen in the industry. It was also supported by the infrastructure to deploy changes to the experience over WIFI whenever an aircraft lands - abrand-new innovation in the industry.

To answer these challenges, Hangar 22 was created, a skunkworks facility only known by a few within the organisation. Its purpose is to imagine, design, and build the cabin experience of the future.

Central to the projects in Hangar 22 was a mantra – “Taking Care Further than any airline on earth”. This represented their mission to express a core value at Air New Zealand, Manaakitanga.
